Childcare vouchers close to new applicants

The Government's childcare vouchers scheme has been closed to new members, as of 4 October 2018.

The employer-backed scheme was originally expected to be replaced by tax-free childcare on 5 April 2018.

However, the childcare vouchers scheme was extended after parents encountered technical problems with its replacement.

Existing beneficiaries may continue to receive childcare vouchers provided they continue to meet the conditions.

Liz Truss, chief secretary to the Treasury, said the Government wanted "a bit more time" to transition to the new scheme, and that tax-free childcare is "now up and running".

Tax-free childcare allows eligible parents to open an online account for savings that can be used to cover various childcare costs.

For every £8 paid in, the Government adds an extra £2 up to a limit of £2,000 a year, or £4,000 for parents of disabled children.

Unlike childcare vouchers, it doesn't need employer backing, making it available to both employed and self-employed individuals.
